5、suggest：认为是 If you suggest that something is the case, you say something which you believe is the case.
suggest除了有“提议”“暗示”等意思之外，在GRE文章中也会考察“认为”这一含义。
【例句】The author suggests that the work of Fisher and Hamilton was similar in that both scientists sought an explanation of why certain sex ratios exist and remain stable.
【翻译】作者认为Fisher和Hamilton的作品是相似的，因为两位科学家都寻求一种解释，解释为什么某种性别比例会存在并且*持稳定。
6、claim：声称 to assert in the face of possible contradiction
claim在字典中的完整释义为“面对可能的反驳时候，你认为是正确的”，但是在做题的过程中，只需翻译成“认为”或“声称”便可减轻阅读时带来的负担。
【例句】Despite these vague categories, one should not claim unequivocally that hostility between recognizable classes cannot be legitimately observed.
【翻译】尽管存在这些模糊的分类，我们不应当明确地认为可见的阶级对立状态不能被恰当的观察到。
7、observe：评述 to make a comment about something you notice
除了“观察到”这一含义，observe在GRE文章中还经常表示“评论”或“认为”。
【例句】As Brown observes, “Valuably insisting that Negro poets should not be confined to issues of race, these poets committed an error… they refused to look into their hearts and write.”
【翻译】正如Brown所认为的，“这些诗人非常有价值地坚持认为黑人诗人不应当被局限于种族问题，但是这些诗人犯了一个错误……他们拒绝直视自己的内心进行写作。”
8、insist：坚持认为 to say something in a way that is very forceful and does not allow disagreement
【例句】When he remade Enoch Arden in 1911, he insisted that a subject of such importance could not be treated in the then conventional length of one reel.
【翻译】他在1911年重拍Enoch Arden时坚持认为，如此重要的题材无法在传统的一个盘片的篇幅之内得到充分展现。
因此当我们在做句子功能题的时候，就可以不用再纠结于每个选项开头处的argue, show等等单词了。因为已经知道这些单词都是“认为”这一个含义，比如：
The author’s purpose in comparing Islamic law to Jewish law and canon law is most probably to
(A) contend that traditional legal subject matter does not play a large role in Islamic law
(E) argue that geographical and historical proximity does not necessarily lead to parallel institutional development
该题中AE两个选项开头虽然用了不同的单词，但是实际含义都是一样的——“认为”。
在考试中遇到argue, contend, maintain, assert, suggest, claim, observe, insist中的哪一个，都直接翻译成“认为”，轻松抛掉复杂句子带给你的阅读负担。
