Signal redundancy means that animals will send the same message with different types of signals to inform the other animals of the same species.

The professor says that a group of deer will sometimes gaze together and sometimes eat alone. And when one deer sees a predator like a lion approaching, it will raise its tail to inform the rest of the deer to run away from the area. But sometimes the other deer cannot see the signal. Assimilation and accommodation:

Assimilation means people tend to include a new concept into the category they have already known, and accommodation means people modify the old category if it doesn’t fit.

The professor’s daughter called anything that had wings and could fly “bird”.

A few years later, his daughter went to the zoo and saw an ostrich. It was taller than the professor and couldn’t fly, so she said it wasn’t a bird. When the professor told her it was a bird, she modified her category of “birds”.

The professor talks about two reasons why people often miss the deadlines.

1. The first reason is that people have low motivation in the project, so they do other things instead of focusing on the project, and then miss the deadline. The professor uses her son’s story to illustrate it. Her son took a science project but he wasn’t interested in science. He likes art and spent most of his time drawing and painting, so he didn’t finish the project and got a low grade in science.

2. The second reason is that people don’t know the detailed steps to finish their work, and actually it will take them more time to finish the work than expected. The professor’s son needed to write an application form for an internship and thought he could finish it in one day. But he didn’t realize that it required a whole week for the professor to write a recommendation letter for him. So he missed the deadline finally.
